Stonewall takes its name from a Texas and Pacific Railroad stop named for General Stonewall Jackson, and for generations the land around it was farm country. Cotton plantations ringed the area, and by 1943 the community had 37 dairies. That began to change in the 1960s, when Stonewall grew into a bedroom community for Shreveport, which lies about 19 miles north on US-171, a highway first graveled in 1916 and paved in the 1930s.
