Haughton's growth and the LA-157 corridor
Haughton grew from 3,454 residents in the 2010 census to 4,539 in 2020, a rise of about 31 percent, and the roads have been catching up. I-20 clips the town's northwest corner, US-80 runs through it, and LA-157 ties the two together. DOTD has reported the first phase of an LA-157 project, which widened the highway from two lanes to five near the Pilot truck stop, as complete, and a second phase moves the LA-3227 junction to a new intersection a short way south. At the 2023 groundbreaking, Mayor Kim Gaspard said a developer planned to build on 70 acres with access to the new road.
Growth like that shows up in driveway work in two ways. New houses in new subdivisions need a first driveway, often on lots where fill dirt was spread and compacted not long before. Older homes on the rural roads around town often have long gravel drives ready for conversion. Either way, what lies underneath decides the job: settling fill and gravel pressed into soft clay both need checking before asphalt is priced.
Where Haughton driveway jobs usually start
- A first driveway on a new build. New asphalt installation over a compacted stone base sized for the soil on that lot.
- A long gravel drive off a parish road. A gravel-to-asphalt conversion, usually with added stone where the old track has sunk into the clay.
- Cracks and settled spots. Asphalt repair for the damaged areas, or replacement when the base underneath has failed.
- A drive a few summers old. Sealcoating once the asphalt has cured, to slow the drying effect of the sun.
- Shops and churches near the interchange. Parking lot paving built for truck turns as well as cars.

Timing the driveway on a new Haughton home
If you are building, leave the driveway until near the end. Concrete trucks, brick pallets and lumber deliveries are heavy enough to crack fresh asphalt along the edges, so many owners lay temporary gravel for the construction period and pave once the heavy deliveries stop.
That gravel need not go to waste. If it was spread over a proper sub-base and has not been churned into mud, it can be regraded, topped up and compacted as part of the base under the asphalt. If it has pumped down into the clay, it has to come out. A small test dig during the visit shows which situation you have.

Can you pave a driveway while my Haughton house is still being built?
We can plan it early, but paving after the concrete trucks and deliveries finish avoids cracked edges. A visit ahead of time lets us set grades and plan the base.
How much does a gravel-to-asphalt conversion cost in Haughton?
Our cost page lists gravel-to-asphalt at $6–10 per square foot, the same range used throughout our area, and new installation on bare ground at $5–10. Prices on this page are estimates from previous work. We cannot quote an exact price. The actual cost can be lower or higher depending on the job. The person who knows is the professional who will do the work. You get a written quote after we see the property.
Does a driveway onto LA-157 or US-80 need a permit?
Usually. Both are state highways, and driveway connections to them come under the Louisiana DOTD access connection rules, so work in the highway right-of-way normally needs a DOTD permit. Turning traffic on those roads is also hard on the apron, so a thicker section there is often worth it.

Do you take jobs outside the Haughton town limits?
Yes. Rural properties around Haughton in Bossier Parish are within our usual area. Long drives are measured on site, because length, width and base condition affect the price far more than the address does. Call (318) 216-6124 to book the visit.
